Drum roll please…

Tomorrow night the Festival do Rio’s Fipresci* Award for Latin American Personality of the Year will be awarded to the Brazilian director Walter Lima Jr.

This year the Brazilian director will join names like Patricio Guzmán, José Carlos Avellar and Guillermo Arriaga in the great cinematic hall of fame. Walter Lima Jr.’s long-career has seen him direct classics like Plantation Boy (Menino de engenho), Lyre of Delirium(A lira do delírio), The Monk and the Hangman’s Daughter (O monge e a filha do carrasco) and The Oyster and the Wind (A ostra e o vento), among many others.

At 76, the director hasn’t stopped: in 2008 he released Slightly Out of Tune (Os desafinados) a homage to the rise of Bossa Nova in the 60s and 70s, and this year announced the upcoming release of Através da sombra (Through the Shadows)**. This latest, part of the Hors Concours selection for this year’s festival, is an adaptation of the Henry James’ classic psychological horror story The Turn of the Screw. The film debuted amid great excitement earlier this week, at the Cinépolis Lagoon (pictured).

The award ceremony will take place today at 6pm in the Instituto Moreira Salles. The event is open to the public and will be followed by a screening of Plantation Boy, restored to high-quality for the big screen.

Tickets are available at the festival’s box-office or online at ingress.com
