Studio Ghibli retrospective comes to the Festival do Rio

This year, the Festival do Rio has the pleasure to announce a homage to one of the most well-loved animation studios in the world –  Studio Ghibli. Created in 1985 by duo Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, the Japanese production company has already made over 20 feature-length films and looks as if it will produce many more.

The now classic Spirited Away (2001) was awarded the Oscar for best animated picture and the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. Ghibli's successes include  My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, Porco Rosso, and many more.

The Festival do Rio has a special event Studio Ghibli – The Madness and the Dreams, which will explore nine Ghibli films, a selection of the old favourites as well as some less well-known productions. The films being screened are:

Tales from Earthsea

When Marnie Was There

My Neighbor Totoro

My Neighbors the Yamadas

The Secret World of Arrietty

Porco Rosso

The Cat Returns

Grave of the Fireflies
