A special screening of Stephen Daldry's Billy Elliot the Musical Live has topped the U.K. and Ireland box office chart, the first time ever for a cinema "event" release. Daldry who presented the film version of Billy Elliot in the Complexo do Alemão at last year's featival, will be back this year to introduce Trash at the Cinepolis Lagoon on 7 October.

Beamed live from London’s Victoria Palace on Sunday to a record 553 locations, including the former miner’s institute where some of the musical is set, the screening of Billy Elliot the Musical Live took in $3.1 million, beating the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special in 2013, which took $2.9 million.
