Première Brasil 2022: Introducing the Brazilian Films Selected for Festival do Rio, Latin America’s Largest Film Festival

From the 6 to 16 October 2022, Première Brasil will screen over 70 new Brazilian productions at Festival do Rio. The films in the competitive sections will compete in several categories for the festival’s Redeemer Trophies

Considered one of the world’s main showcases for Brazilian cinema, Festival do Rio has announced its selection for Première Brasil 2022. Seventy Brazilian productions have been selected - among features and shorts - from new talent as well as established directors, from the more than 450 short films and 200 feature films submitted for consideration. The selected titles are spread among the competitive festival sections (Official Competition and New Directions) as well as the special sidebars that include Portraits and The State of Things, and the films screening Hors Concours.

Première Brasil also stages screenings and debates with the films’ cast and crews, and offers the festival going audiences the opportunity to vote for their favourite feature, documentary and short films.

Despite the challenges faced in recent years, Festival do Rio has high expectations for 2022 and has as its new master sponsor Shell Brazil (under Federal Law for Cultural Incentive) and the support of Mayor and City of Rio de Janeiro - through RioFilme, an organisation that is part of SEGOVI (Secretaria Municipal de Governo e Integridade Pública).

"For Shell it is very significant to sponsor the largest film festival in Latin America, especially in this context of the resumption of Brazil’s cultural life. We drive progress by generating value for society and, certainly, by being part of Festival do Brasil, the heritage of Rio de Janeiro, and it reinforces our commitment to the creativity and inventiveness of audiovisual sector, providing the general public with access to many of the world's recent major works," celebrates Glauco Paiva, Executive Manager of Communication and Social Responsibility for Shell Brazil.

"RioFilme is proud to support Festival do Rio, which each year expands its potential as a showcase for the best of Brazilian and international cinema. It is also time to celebrate the return of RioMarket, which promotes debates essential to enhance the presence of the Brazilian audiovisual industry in the international market, creating opportunities for new partnerships and the exchange of experiences; and fulfilling the fundamental role of strengthening with the public the strategic importance that the audiovisual sector has for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. We are united in this mission to make Rio de Janeiro a reference point for the global audiovisual industry. Long live Festival do Rio!" says Eduardo Figueira, President Director of RioFilme.

Festival do Rio 2022 is returning to its traditional spot on the calendar and will take place between 6 and 16 October at various cinemas and locations across Rio de Janeiro - such as those of the Circuito Estação NET, among others. Returning to the Festival do Rio circuit in 2022 is the iconic Cine Odeon - Centro Cultural Luiz Severiano Ribeiro, in Cinelândia, which this year will again host the gala nights for international and Brazilian films screening Hors Concours.

"Première Brasil was created to be a great shop window for Brazilian cinema. We are interested - more than ever - in making our films accessible and well-known throughout Brazil. Over the decades Festival do Rio has also consolidated itself as an important platform for Brazilian cinema abroad, projecting our prestige and talent internationally,”  adds Ilda Santiago, Executive Program Director of Festival do Rio.
