The festival’s Première Brasil section has always been known as an outstanding showcase for new Brazilian documentaries, and this year is no exception with eight features length documentaries screening in competition and five hors concours.
Screening in competition Thursday through Friday are Roberto Berliner’s A Farra do Circo (Ruckus at the Circus), the story of one of Rio’s legendary music venues; and Susana Lira’s Damas do Samba (Samba Ladies), a look at leading female sambistas.
In 2012, César Oiticica Filho’s Hélio Oiticica, was selected as the best documentary of Première Brasil and went on to win the FIPRESCI critics’ prize for the International Forum of New Cinema at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival.
