Another classic of Brazilian cinema and one of the first Brazilian films to achieve international success, Lima Barreto’s  “O Cangaceiro”, screens on Monday at Estação NET Rio 2 at 17.00 and on Wednesday at the Caixa Cultural at 16.00. In 1953 it was winner in Cannes of the award for the Best Action Film with a Special Mention for Gabriel Migliori's soundtrack.

Barreto (1906–1982) started his career in the 1940s directing short films. He joined Vera Cruz Cinematographical Company, following an invitation from director Alberto Cavalcanti. There he made documentaries like Painel (1950) and directed O Cangaceiro (1953), Unable to carry out the ambitious project O Sertanejo, he went back to documentaries with São Paulo em Festa (1954) and later released A Primeira Missa (1961), exhibited in Cannes.

O Cangaceiro’s gang spreads terror through the Northeastern Caatinga (dry shrubland). In one of his attacks, he kidnaps the teacher Olívia, however both he and his right-hand man are attracted to the beautiful captive and a conflict is established within the gang..
