Two very different films, but both with a political edge, have gala screenings Thursday at the Cine Odeon. At 19.30 Antonio Pitanga’s “Malês” will screen and at  22.00 Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice” that premiered in competition in Cannes this year.

“Malês” is a journey of resistance and courage, set in the vibrant Salvador of 1835. During their wedding, two young Muslims are torn from their homeland in Africa and sold into slavery in Brazil. Separated by this cruel fate, both struggle to survive and reunite while becoming entangled in the largest slave uprising in Brazilian history: the Malê Revolt.

“The Apprentice” starts in New York in the 1970s and 1980s, as a young Donald Trump begins his property business through a bargain with Roy Cohn, the influential — and polemical — lawyer and and political mediator. Hungry for power in a context of corruption, ambitious Trump goes from businessman to reality show celebrity and finally becomes president of the United States and one of the most polemical figures in the world.

There will be another chance to see “Malês” on Friday at Estação NEt Rio at 16.00 and on Saturday at Reserva Cultural Niteroi at 18.40. “The Apprentice” will screen again on Friday at Reserva Cultural Niteroi at 21.15 and at the Estação NET Gavea on Sunday at 21.45
