Appropriate that award winning director Karim Aïnouz’s latest feature “Firebrand”, that premiered this year in Cannes, screened hours concours at Festival do Rio on Sunday at the Cine Odeon. Karim’s films have in the past won the top prize in Rio, he himself has won the director prize on a number of occasions, and has also presided over the jury.

Karim’s film include “Madame Satã” (2002), which screened in Cannes; “Futuro Beach” (2014, Berlinale); “The Silver Cliff” (2011, Quinzaine des Realisateurs); “I Travel Because I Have to, I Come Back Because I Love You” (2009, Venice); “Love for Sale” (2006, Venice); and “The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmão” that in 2019 won the top prize in Un Certain Regard at Cannes.

“Firebrand” is Karim’s first English language feature and focuses on blood-soaked Tudor England, and Katherine Parr, the sixth and last wife of Henry VIII.

Karim was asl o seen of screen Sunday contributing his thoughts on Cannes in “Cannes Uncut”. The documentary screens again at Estação NET Gavea 2 on Wednesday at 19.50 and at Kinoplex Sāo Luiz 4 at 16.00 on Friday.
