Joint honors for Rogéria and Suzy Capó Two prizes that celebrate the LGBT+ community will be awarded tomorrow at the Festival do Rio.
Just last year the Festival do Rio inaugurated its Felix Award, celebrating all those films that speak out about gender diversity and give voice to the world’s growing LGBT+ community.
This year is another year for firsts: the festival is pleased to announce the bestowing of a new prize, the Suzy Capó LGBT+ Personality of the Year Award, created to honour individuals for their commitment to the cause.
We are thrilled to announce that the 2015 Suzy Capó award goes to the Brazilian television actress and personality Rogéria, a well-known and enthusiastic promoter of gay and transgender rights, a household name for over 50 years. Rogéria also starred in the documentary De gravata e unha vermelha that was awarded the Felix Prize last year.
The award is named in homage to the great Suzy Capó, prolific journalist and active contributor to the Brazilian cultural scene, who died earlier this year. Suzy Capó will be greatly missed by us all at the Festival.
Also on Sunday night the jury – including filmmaker Daniel Ribeiro, director of The Way He Looks (Hoje eu quero voltar sozinho), Portuguese journalist and film critic Kathleen Gomes and journalist Gilberto Scofield – will announce the winner of the Felix Award. The 25 films selected come to the festival from all corners of the world and from all categories across cinematic production, proving that gender diversity has a strong and impactful presence on the international stage.
