It’s an action-packed Wednesday here at the festival, with plenty of gala screenings with introductions, debates and Q&As with casts and crews.

Excitement levels reached their peak so far at the festival with American director Hal Hartley’s arrival. The filmmaker, writer, director, producer, and composer has come to the Festival do Rio 2015 to share his cinematic experiences with dedicated fans and aspiring filmmakers. Hartley will present his latest work Ned Rifle tonight at the Estação NET Botafogo 1 at 9.15pm, and will also be offering not-to-be-missed session, Cinema Lessons with Hal Hartley, at 3pm, at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil.

The documentary, The Man who Mends Women (L’Homme qui Répare les Femmes), part of the Frontiers screenings, will be shown at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil at 3.30pm, with an introduction by the director Thierry Michel and will be followed by a debate entitled “The female body as a battle-field”.

Today there will also be two sessions from the Orson Welles in Rio screenings, with two academics from the field. At 2pm catch Too Much Johnson at the Instituto Moreira Salles with an introduction by Adalberto Müller, professor at the UFF. Later, at 7.30pm at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, The Magnificent Ambersons will be shown, followed by a discussion with Wellesian scholar James Naremore, from the University of Indiana.

At 7.15pm at the Cine Odeon – Centro Cultural Luiz Severiano Ribeiro there is a special gala session of He Named me Malala, part of the celebrations that mark the 20th anniversary of Fox Searchlight’s involvement with the Festival do Rio.

Finally, two films are being introduced by their producers tonight: at 7pm at the Estação NET Ipanema 1 Elias Ribeiro presents Necktie Youth and at 7.40pm at the Estação NET Ipanema 2 Sara Fgaier presents Lost and Beautiful (Bela e Perduta).
