With a very strong crop of new documentaries, Festival do Rio in 2013 has a special new section, 'Panorama - Great Documentary Filmmakers'.

Featured documentary filmmakers include Frederick Wiseman (At Berkeley), Nicolas Philibert (La Maison de la radio), Errol Morris  (The Unknown Known), Rithy Panh (The Missing Picture) and Claude Lanzmann (Le dernier des injustes), as well as filmmakers normally better known for drama, including Marcel Ophuls (Ain’t Misbehavin), Ken Loach (The Spirit of ’45) and Werner Herzog (On Death Row).

The festival’s Première Brasil section has always been known as an outstanding showcase for new Brazilian documentaries, and this year is no exception with eight features length documentaries screening in competition and five hors concours . In 2012, César Oiticica Filho’s Hélio Oiticica, was selected as the best documentary of Première Brasil and went on to win the FIPRESCI critics’ prize for the International Forum of New Cinema at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival.
