The 19th Festival do Rio, Rio de Janeiro’s international film festival, takes place in 2017 from 5 to 15 October.

Running parallel with the festival is RioMarket that focuses on film and television production from 9 to 14 October. The full RioMarket programme can be found at www.riomarket.com.br/en/

Festival do Rio and RioMarket are based this year at the iconic Hotel Gran Meliá Nacional Rio in Sao Conrado, a building that was designed by the great Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer and originally opened its doors to guests in 1972. Activities and events will also take place at the neighbouring Royal Tulip Rio.

The Gran Meliá Nacional Rio previously hosted FestRio, a film festival that in the 1980s preceded Festival do Rio, as well as the Free Jazz Festival, while the hotel’s theatre staged numerous performances by leading international and Brazilian stars.

Recognised as a national heritage site, Gran Meliá Nacional Rio houses some of Brazil’s most treasured modern art. The entrance of the hotel features the “Painel de Carybé” created by Hector Bernabó (aka Carybé), a painter, sculptor, historian and journalist. The artwork includes 270 individually sculpted concrete slabs depicting classic carioca characters. Burle Marx’s gardens are also a stunning legacy belonging to the hotel and feature 46 species of native Brazilian plants and classic paving stones, known as “calçado”, which have been imported from Portugal. Roberto Burle Marx was a Brazilian landscape architect whose designs of parks and gardens made him world famous.
