The Festival do Rio 2015 opens tonight with a very special screening: Chico – Brazilian Artist, by Miguel Faria Jr. The night looks to be one to remember for two reasons: firstly, the film's national significance, dealing, as it does, with one of Brazil's biggest names, and secondly, because the screening will take place in the LSR Cultural Centre – Odeon, a venue that has been closed for reconstruction for the past year.

The documentary explores the life and work of author, playwright and composer Chico Buarque.  This mesmerising film, a culmination of two years of work, follows the normally camera-shy Chico as he reflects openly on his past experiences, successes and intimate recollections. Chico – Brazilian Artist, which depicts a moving portrait of one of the country’s most iconic figures, accompanied by – it goes without saying – a truly Brazilian musical score, is a fitting introduction to the sights and sounds of the Festival do Rio.

Migual Faria Jr. will return to the festival for this grand opening. It’s been ten years since he last presented here, which was in 2005 when his musical documentary Vinícius hit the screens and became one of the biggest national successes of that year.
