The brilliant Spanish artist and designer Javier Mariscal introduced the festival’s opening film, “They Shot the Piano Player”, alongside the directors of Festival do Rio, to a packed and appreciative audience at the Cine Odeon on Thursday.

Along with Fernando Trueba, Mariscal co-directed but also drew the docudrama. It is their second collaboration following on from the Academy Award nominated “Chico and Rita”.

Rio de Janeiro and its music are very much characters in the new film (that will be released in Brazil by Sony) making it a popular choice as the festival’s opening film.

The film casts some of Brazil’s greatest musical figures, from João Gilberto to Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Vinicius de Moraes, Paulo Moura, and others, all of them giving heartfelt testimony to the enormous talent and vision Tenório Jr. had and shared with them.
