The 26th edition of Festival do Rio, Rio de Janeiro’s International Film Festival, announced its winners Sunday (13 October) for the competitive sections of the festival, including Première Brasil, New Trends and the Felix Awards for films that celebrate LGBTQIAPN+- culture and topics.


Two films, “Baby”, directed by Marcelo Caetano, and “Malu”, directed by Pedro Freire, were chosen by the jury to share the best fiction film prize in Première Brasil. “Baby” had its world premiere at Critics Week in Cannes this year, while “Malu” premiered in Sundance.


Besides best picture, “Malu” also picked up the Redentors for best actress, best supporting actress and screenplay, while “Baby” won prizes for best actor and art direction, as well as the Special Jury prize from the Felix jury.


Another multiple winner on the night from Première Brasil was ”Kasa Branca”, winning the prizes for best direction (Luciano Vidigal), best supporting actor, best cinematography and best soundtrack.


3 Obás de Xangô”, by Sérgio Machado, was chosen by the Première Brasil jury to be the best documentary screened, a film that revolves around the unconditional friendship between Jorge Amado, Dorival Caymmi and Carybé, principal artists for the creation of a Bahian consciousness that persists to this day. 


Festival do Rio received 752 entries for Première Brasil in 2024 - 530 shorts and 222 features - from Brazilian filmmakers, as well as from co-production partners with Brazil.


Première Brasil is considered one of the world’s most important showcases and shop windows for Brazilian cinema, and in 2024 over 80 Brazilian productions were selected - features and shorts - allowing the festival to showcase a wide panorama of young and established Brazilian filmmakers.


Centro Ilusão”, directed by Pedro Diogenes, was chosen best film by the New Trends jury, while the Felix jury picked “Avenida Beira-Mar”, directed by Maju de Paiva and Bernardo Florim as best Brazilian feature; Hong Kong’s “All Shall Be Well” (Tudo Vai Ficar Bem), directed by Ray Yeung, as best international feature; and France’s “La Belle de Gaza” (A Bela de Gaza ), directed by Yolande Zauberman, as best documentary.


The awards for 2024 were announced and presented during a gala ceremony Sunday at the historic Cine Odeon - Centro Cultural Luiz Severiano Ribeiro, in Cinelândia in the heart of Rio de Janeiro.
