Alexan is the last deep sea diver on the island of Mabul, to the west of the large island Borneo in Malaysia. He teaches his 10-year-old nephew Sari everything he knows, from dangerous fishing techniques to extensive knowledge of the underwater world. Alexan refuses to accept that the world of his ancestors belongs to another time, whilst Sari divides his time between his desire to become a fisherman like his uncle, and the new world that is emerging with the presence of nearby resorts. The urgent pressures and the new local problems are a mixture of fantasy, fiction and reality.
