Warriors and lady prisoners: these are the inhabitants of Obitania, the dreamy rural setting in which this film takes place. Fogo Lompa must choose between his duties as a warrior and his carnal passions. In Obtiania, economy is as illogical as sex, and everything boils down to nonsensical intrigue. “I dreamt of an impossible machine, which became possible as soon as I dreamt it”, says Rimamba, one of Fogo Lompa’s love interests. This is Guiraudie’s world: a machine capable of capturing cinema’s most libertarian, improper dreams. Best screenplay, Turin 2005.
