Only a small fraction of African American ballerinas make it to the highest level of classical ballet. Misty Copeland emerged as part of the American Ballet Theater as a soloist. In 2013, she starred in Stravinski’s The Firebird Suite. On the opening night, having won everyone over, she discovered that she had six fractures in her shin. We meet the dancer at a crucial moment, going through her painful fight and culminating in an unexpected third act, when she rises again not just as a ballerina, but as a pop star. Misty is currently ABT’s Prima Ballerina.
