In search of a new start and the American dream, Ewa Cybulski and sister Magda leave their native Poland for New York in 1921. Upon docking in Ellis Island, doctors discover Madga is ill, and the two are separated. Ewa wanders through the streets of Manhattan while her sister remains quarantined. Alone and helpless, she quickly falls prey to Bruno, a charming but wicked man who tries to force her into prostitution. From the director of Two Lovers and We Own the Night, this is the fourth time director James Gray and actor Joaquim Phoenix work together. Cannes 2013.

James Gray

Born in New York, in 1969. His directorial debut came at the age of 25 with the acclaimed Little Odessa (1994), winner of a Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. His second film, The Yards (2000), was selected to compete at Cannes, such as 2007’s We Own the Night. Two Lovers (2008), his third collaboration with Joaquin Phoenix, won him a César Award nomination.
