His powerful documentary spans 21 years, chronicling Amichai Lau-Lavie, an Israeli from a line of 38 rabbis. Arriving in 1990s New York, Lau-Lavie, a young gay man, declares “Artists are the new rabbis” and performs in drag as Rebbetzin Hadassah Gross. Over time, he explores spiritual and creative ventures like Storahtelling and Lab/Shul, eventually becoming a rabbi in the Conservative tradition. The film captures Lau-Lavie’s bravery and evolution, culminating in his reflections on Israel, Palestine, and the quest for peace.

Filmmaker born in New York. His films have been shown at major festivals and in 2020, he joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Director of Trembling Before G-D (2001). He co-founded a group of visual political creation, The Creative Resistance, and started his activism at the nonprofit Planned Parenthood.
