A reflection on the Pacifying Police Units (UPPs) via the politically-informed dialogues of performing artists from some of Rio’s communities. Including Cathola, a musician who was shot and arrested by the police soon after an UPP was installed in the Cantagalo favela, where he lives. Through music and performances tackling the subject of social exclusion and police brutality, these artists question the rhetoric of pacification and debate to what extent the arrival of UPPs represents an intensification of a process of criminalizing poverty.
