The history of Germany from the end of the Second World War to the 1980s is told through the experiences and day to day life of one single family: the Freytags. From the economic boom of the 1950s to the youth rebellion of 1968 to East Berlin’s punk movement in the late 1970s and early 80s – these are a few of the episodes faces by Erich, his son Klaus and grandson Robert. As secondary characters, a lot of garden gnomes take up the scenes. An adaptation of the slightly autobiographical novel Herkunft, written by director Oskar Roehler himself.
