Peter von Kant is a film director who lives with his assistant, Karl, whom he likes to abuse and humiliate. Sidonie, an actress who was his muse for many years, introduces him to Amir, a handsome and modest young man. Peter falls in love with Amir and offers his apartment as a shelter, as well as helping him to get into the film industry. When the plan works, Amir dumps Peter.
