Englishman Julian, member of a powerful family of criminals, runs a boxing academy in Bangkok that is actually a cover-up for an international heroin operation. When his younger brother is killed after murdering a prostitute, he gets a visit from his mother Crystal, who is obsessed with the idea of recovering her son’s body and avenging his death. Gradually, the city will make its own rules known to both. This film marks the second teaming of Ryan Gosling and Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, a collaboration that started with Drive (2011). Official Competition at Cannes 2013.
Nicolas Winding Refn
Born in Denmark, in 1970. For Drive (2011), he the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival. His feature film debut came with the crime drama Pusher (1996). He went on to direct Bleeder (1999), shown at the Venice Film Festival, and Fear X (2003), selected for the Sundance Film Festival. Bronson (2006), based on the life story of famous British criminal Charles Bronson, was shown at the Rotterdam Film Festival and Sundance.
