Brazil reaches the peak of military dictatorship after the AI-5 decree, in December 1968. It provokes radical press censorship, as well as the suppression of civil rights for Brazilian citizens. In mid 1969, a group of middle class youth from Rio opt for clandestinity and armed struggle. These members of MR-8 (Movimento Revolucionário 8 de Outubro) plan the first kidnapping of an ambassador for political motives, targeting the North American representative in Brazil, to break the press "wall of silence".
Bruno Barreto
One of Brazil's most international filmmakers, born in 1955, began to film aged 17, when he made Tati, a Garota (1972). His extensive curriculum of more than 20 films, includes Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos (1977), a film with 10 million spectators, Brazil's box-office champion for many years. What is This, My Friend (1997), was nominated for the Foreign Film Oscar. Bruno is the son of producers Lucy and Luiz Carlos Barreto.
