Based on Heinrich Von Kleist’s homonym work, known to be Kafka’s favorite book and to have given him his first impulse to become a writer, this is the story of Michael Kohlhaas, a horse merchant who leads a happy, prosperous life alongside his family in 19th century Cévennes. When a nobleman treats him unfairly, he is willing to wage war in order to restore his honor and dignity. According to its director, the film was made under three “crushing” influences: Herzog’s Aguirre, Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai and Tarkovsky’s Andrey Roublev. Official Competition, Cannes 2013.
