Religion still dictates the day-to-day rules at Borough Park, an orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn. There, Menashe, a kind and unhappy merchant, lives alone with his son Rieven since the death of his wife Leah. Tradition, however, forbids a man to raise a child without a wife's presence, making him give his son up to be adopted by a close relative. The distance from Rieven breaks Menashe’s heart, but they will have a week together before Leah’s funeral. This is his chance to prove himself as a man of faith and a suitable father.
