May, an American woman of Jordanian ancestry, is the author of a successful book and lives a life of refinement in New York City. Amidst preparations for her wedding, the young woman flies to Jordan in order to enjoy summer with her family. Faced with her relatives’ resistance towards her wedding and her parents’ divorce procedures, May must reassess her entire life. With humor and profound affection towards her characters, director, author and leading actress Cherien Dabis lightly conducts a narrative characterized by a strong sense of cultural identity. Cherien Dabis
Born in the USA, in 1976. Her first short film, Make a Wish (2007), was shown at the Sundance Film Festival and received a Special Jury Mention at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival. With her first feature, Amreeka (2009), she won the FIPRESCI Award at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes and was selected for the Sundance Film Festival. Her TV work includes directorial duties in episodes of The L Word from 2006 to 2009.
