A discreet man with English grandparents, Mario Wallace Simonsen (1909-1965) was a businessman and great entrepreneur. He owned a conglomerate of more than 30 companies, including Panair do Brasil; TV Excelsior; Wasim and Comal, the largest coffee exporter in Brazil, which was hit by the coup d’etat on March 31st 1964 that put in power people who considered Simonsen an enemy. It was obvious that the dictatorship wanted to destroy him, but their reasons for this were less obvious.
