Mariner of the Mountains is a travel diary filmed during Karim Aïnouz's first journey to Algeria, his father's birthplace. Combining travel records, home movies, family photographs, historical archives and segments of hi-8, the feature traces a fine line between the director's parents' love story, the Algerian War of Independance, childhood memories and the contrasts between Cabília (the mountainous region in northern Algeria) and Fortaleza, hometown of Karim and his mother, Iracema. Past, present and future are interlinked in a unique journey.
