Hirata longs to become a great filmmaker. As he plans out his first masterpiece, a violent dispute between two Yakuza clans begins to escalate: the wife of big boss Muto massacres the Ikegami, a rival gang, and her arrest ends up sacrificing her daughter Michiko’s dreams of becoming an actress. Ten years later, Muto decides to prove to his wife, soon to be released from jail, that Michiko has indeed become a star. That’s when Hirata’s path crosses the Yakuza’s in a veritable orgy of blood and cinema. Official Selection at the Toronto and Venice Film Festivals 2013.
Sion Sono
Born in Toyokawa, Japan, in 1961. He started out his career as a poet at 17. During his attendance at the University of Hosei, he started making 8mm shorts. His first feature, shot in 16mm, is Bicycle Sighs (1990), a huge box-office hit in Japan. With Suicide Club (2001), he became known in the West, where his films have attained cult status. He went on to direct films such as Guilty of Romance (2011) and The Land of Hope (2012).
