In 9 years of his pontificate, Pope Francis has made 37 trips, visiting 53 countries. His itineraries follow the thread of the central themes of our time: poverty, environment, migration, peace, and solidarity. In a kind of Way of the Cross, Francis witnesses the suffering of the world and experiences the difficulty of doing more, beyond the comfort offered by his words and his presence. Filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi follows in his footsteps and creates a dialogue between his records and the archives of the pope's journeys.
