Based on the experiences of eight former members of the Church of Scientology, documentarian Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side, Mea Maxima Culpa) undertakes a profound analysis of that 20th century phenomenon, which has A-list Hollywood celebrities among its members. The film tells the story of how the Church began – with an intimate profile of its founder, L. Ron Hubbard – and goes right up until the present day, investigating in depth the accusations of abuse that newspapers splurge – especially those surrounding Scientology’s most famous member, Tom Cruise. Sundance 2015.
