On his wedding night, Marcos kills his wife having found out that she was not a virgin. The scandal has repercussions, but he is acquitted. He moves to Guaraíba, where he runs the construction of a factory, aided by Décio, who lives with his paralytic mother, and Sônia, his stepsister. Sônia is interested in Marcos and Décio, who loves her platonically, fears that something will happen between the two. Marcos is still tormented by memories of his relationship with the wife he murdered. A picture of Brazilian life in the 1930s, dominated by sensuality, sexual repression, and urban violence.
