Marten Brückling is a solitary German and former music teacher who travels to a small Brazilian city to get an inheritance: a lost music sheet of Johann Sebastian Bach. When he is mugged, he loses his documents and the music. Until Candido, a man from the city, promises to help him find his belongings. In exchange, he asks Marten to give music lessons to the inmates at the juvenile detention centre where he works. Initially reluctant, Marten accepts and soon finds himself overcome by his happiness and passion for music, which he had lost long ago.
