Dr. Mukwege, who won the Sakharov Award in 2014, dedicated his life for the last 20 years to caring for women raped during the ongoing conflict in the East of Congo. 40,000 women have already been treated in the Panzi Hospital which he founded. Despite his international fame, his tireless campaign against the atrocious use of rape as a weapon of war attracts the ire of the armed forces disputing the mineral wealth of his country. After surviving an assassination attempt in 2012, he stays in his hospital in Bakuvo, under protection of the UN Peacekeeping Forces.
