Proud of his job, but already feeling the weight of his years, the old doorman at the Atlantis Hotel is demoted to servant at the man’s restroom. This step down has a disastrous effect on the old man’s self-esteem and the prestige of his family, friends and neighbors. Written by Carl Mayers, this is one of the last films in Murnau’s German period, and is considered to be one of the most representative works in the Kammerspiel genre, a more realistic, psychology-driven approach in expressionistic cinema. A restored print of the 1924 classic.
