​In a village in the north of Turkey, Lale and her four sisters walk home from school while playing innocently with some boys. However, the immorality of this play leads to a scandal with unexpected consequences. Progressively, Lale’s family’s house becomes a prison. Lessons at school are abruptly replaced with domestic chores and weddings begin to be arranged. Passionate about freedom, the five sisters will now try to avoid the restrictions that have been imposed on them. Directors’ Fortnight 2015.​

Deniz Gamze Ergüven

​Born in Ankara, Turkey, he studied cinema at Femís in France and did a master’s in art in Johannesburg. His graduation film, Bir Damla Su (2006), was shown at the Cinéfondation Section of the Cannes Festival, and won an award at Locarno. This is the first feature he has directed.​
