World War 1 draws to a close. Stefano and Giulio, childhood friends, work in the same military hospital where every day the most seriously wounded arrive from the front. While Stefano dreams of a future in politics. Giulio proves to be a more understanding and tolerant doctor with talent for research. Their silent rivalry intensifies in the presence of Anna, friends with both since university. Gianni Amelio
Born in Calabria. After studying Philosophy, he moved to Rome where he began working as an assistant director. He debuted as a film director with Colpire al Cuore (1982) after a lengthy experience in television. He has won numerous international awards including the Golden Lion in Venice for Cosi Ridevano (1998) and the Grand Prix in Cannes for The Stolen Children (1992).
