The music of the twentieth century has appropriated non-musical noises such as machinery, traffic, the hum of big cities etc. This impulse appears clearly in rock, especially in the shoegaze movement of English origin used by bands like Cocteau Twins, The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine in the late 1980s. The movement influenced many other worldwide bands. Beyond the contemplative introspection, it has, in its essence, layers upon layers of guitars that transcend conventional harmony, even in the context of traditional pop song, and become good noise.
