Cheng Dieyi and Duan Xiaolou grow up enduring the harsh training of the Peking Opera Academy. As the two boys mature, they develop complementary talents: Dieyi, with his fine, delicate features, assumes the female roles while Xiaolou plays masculine warlords. Their dramatic identities become real for Dieyi when he falls in love with Xiaolou, who fails to fully reciprocate his affections and marries a courtesan. Palme d'Or winner and nominated for the Oscars.

Chen Kaige

Born in Beijing, China, in 1952, he studied at the Beijing Film Academy and composed the Fifth Generation of Chinese directors. Son of filmmaker Huaiai Chen, he made his directorial debut with the acclaimed Yellow Earth (1984). He also directed The King of Children (1988) and Life on a String (1991) before his greatest success, Farewell My Concubine. He then released Temptress Moon (1996), The Emperor and the Assassin (1998) and Forever Enthralled (2008), among others.
