1917. Fleeing hunger, antisemitism and war in Poland, Rebeca arrives in Rio de Janeiro ready to begin her life anew. The reality she encounters in the city is very different from the promises of happiness. On discovering that her husband has died, she ends up captive of a network of prostitution and traffic of Jewish women, commanded by the pitiless Tzvi. Forced to transgress her own principles, she finds allies living the same drama and together they fight for freedom.

João Jardim's pioneering spirit and strong social engagement makes him one of the most active directors of his generation. His first film was the celebrated documentary Window of the Soul (2001). His films include Amor? (2011) and Getúlio (2014). He is director and codirector of the documentaries For a Better Day (2005) e Waste Land (2010), the latter nominated for an Oscar. He is creator and director of the series Liberdade de Gênero (2016–2017) and Amores Livres (2015).
