In the 1980s, the Cuban government, with the structural and financial help of the Soviet Union, began building a nuclear reactor in the province of Cienfuegos, in the Juragaú region of Cuba. After the Chernobyl accident, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Soviet Union, the project was abandoned and became a huge white elephant.
